Recruiting Terms
Assuming your academics are good enough to make you eligible for college sports, it’s important to understand the NCAA’s recruiting terms. The NCAA places different recruiting terms and rules on each sport, and it’s important for prospective collegiate athletes to understand and keep track of the terms and rules.
| Contact | A contact occurs any time a coach has face-to-face contact with a student athlete or her parents off of the college’s campus and says more than just hello. Contact can occur anywhere off of the college’s campus, including a high school or any place the student athlete is practicing or competing. |

| Contact Period | This is a time when contact is allowed to occur between a coach and either a student athlete or his parents. This face-to-face contact can occur at a high school, where the student is competing or practicing, or any other location. |
| Dead Period | College coaches can’t have any in-person contact with a student athlete or her parents during this period. He may write and/or telephone the athlete or her parents. |
| Evaluation | This is where the college coach evaluates a student athlete’s academic or athletic ability. This includes visiting the student’s high school or watching him practice or compete. |
| Evaluation Period | During an evaluation period, college coaches can watch student athletes play or visit their high schools, but they can’t have any in-person conversations with the athletes or their parents off of the college campus. Students and their parents can visit the college campus during an evaluation period. The coach can write letters to student athletes or call them on a telephone. |
| Quiet Period | During this period, the coach can’t have any in-person contact with student athletes or their parents off of the college’s campus. The coach may not watch the athlete play or visit their high school, but athletes and their parents may visit the college campus. The coach can write or call on the phone. |
