College Visits
Experts recommend starting to make unofficial visits to college in the first two years of high school. An unofficial visit by a student athlete and his/ her parents to a college campus can be done any time. The only expense the college can pay for an unofficial visit is three complementary tickets to a home athletics contest. You can make as many unofficial visits as they’d like and can take those visits any time. The only time they cannot talk to the coach on a visit is if that visit occurs during a dead period. During your unofficial visit, take the campus tour offered by the admissions office. Many admissions offices also offer group information sessions before or after their tours. This will give you a chance to see how the college presents itself. If you are with your parents, separate from them so you can compare notes later. Wander around without a tour to get a feel for the campus, the college students, the facilities, and the professors. Read the bulletin boards. Look in the classrooms. If you have interest in a particular subject, visit the areas of the campus, other than the athletic facilities, where you’ll be spending time. Eat in the cafeteria and talk to the students sitting near you. Find out what they like and don’t like about their school.
When a college pays for a visit, whether it pays for the entire visit or just part of it, it’s considered an official visit. Official visits are not allowed until the beginning of an athlete’s senior year of high school. The NCAA allows one expenses-paid visit to up to 5 different schools, even if you are being recruited for more than one sport. Each visit can last up to 48 hours. You must be registered with the Clearinghouse to have an official visit.
